BIO: Anthony (Tony) Shelton received his BA in Classics and Philosophy in 1971 from St. Mary’s College, worked in business for a few years, and then returned to school to study biology, receiving his Ph.D. in entomology in 1979 from the University of California, Riverside. He began his professorial career at Cornell in 1979 and has remained at Cornell ever since. In his position, he is responsible for developing sound integrated pest management (IPM) strategies for vegetables with spin-offs for other crops. Components of the program stress insect population ecology, biological control, plant resistance, agricultural biotechnology, insecticide resistance, insect movement, trap cropping, and plant productivity and marketability as a function of insect infestations. His appointment is 70% research, 15% extension and 15% teaching. In the last 15 years, Tony has been especially active in studying how transgenic insecticidal plants can fit into IPM programs. In 2008, he co-edited a book entitled, Integration of Insect-Resistant Genetically Modified Crops within IPM Programs. He currently works on projects to introduce Bt eggplant and Bt crucifers into India. Tony has published over 300 research and extension publications and served on several USDA and EPA panels on transgenic insecticidal plants. Tony won the Entomological Society of America’s National Award in IPM (1995) and National Recognition Award for Research (2005). In 2007 he was awarded Cornell’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences Award for Applied Research.
